The New Camera for Street Photography
It’s so easy to fall down the well of “need great gear to make great pictures.” It’s a compelling argument. It’s why camera manufacturers get celebrities to endorse their gear. Sometimes even celebrity photographers. Gear has it’s own eco-system of advertising and reviews that feed more advertising. It’s complicated. But taking pictures shouldn’t be. Chase Jarvis kicked things off with the “Best... Read More
Federal Protection Services and Photography
At first when I saw this article in The New York Times photography blog Lens I was pretty stoked. Nice to have some documentation in hand that indicates what your rights are when out and about taking pictures. Of course, I was viewing it on my iPad and, as a remarkable device as it is it’s not exactly conducive to printing something out. Yet. Get into my office and discover that the links they’re providing are, to put it kindly, a bit... Read More
Seven Habits
Caught this post across my Twitter feed from Scott Bourne. It’s a good read. The only thing I’d likely add is that those are seven habits that are good for anybody doing anything. Read More
2010 Cooke Street Carnival
2010 Cooke Street Carnival was a good time. Drank some tasty beverages, saw some fun stuff including a fantastic Stella Lively set. #gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } Read More
2010 fashionSPARK Show
Possibly the most glamourous part of every year’s SPARKcon is fashionSPARK. It’s a pretty fun event to shoot for those of us who don’t do regular fashion gigs. Even from the non-official photographer corral. #gallery-2 { margin: auto; } #gallery-2 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-2 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-2... Pilot Mill
We’ve been doing some work for a new client who’s office is over in Pilot Mill—one of the early brownfield projects here in Raleigh. It’s this great example of reclaimed space. A huge mill in it’s golden years and now some nice commercial space in one of my favorite parts of town. Anyhow, the site we were working on needed some simple accent shots. Some texture. A little flavor of the space they’re in. So, on the way... Read More
The Lady in the Culvert
Had to run out and shoot some quick and dirty (not that kind of dirty) video for a client yesterday and stumbled across this. A nice little reminder to go off the beaten path more often. Read More
Brentwood Luminarias
For forty years our neighborhood, Brentwood, has displayed luminarias on Christmas Eve. For the entire time we’ve lived here, the Brentwood Exchange Club has taken on the task of raising the money, securing donations and the logistics of that morning. Brentwood is not a small neighborhood so this is no trivial matter. This year though they announced that atrophying membership meant they’d be unable to pull it off this year. With word of... K9 Kings at Campbell
J.D. Platt and his K9 Kings arrived in the Triangle last Friday for a Halloween Halftime show at Campbell University. Despite getting ready for the thirteenth annual Halloween party, we snuck out to Buies Creek to catch the show. When J.D. told me he could round up a Media Pass for me I grabbed the cameras, a handful of lenses and piled them into a bag and we were off. Shooting flying dogs is hard. I’ll be the first to say that what I have here... Read More
Rebuilding Together Wrap Up
So, back in September I spent the day covering a Rebuilding Together project. It was a solid day of shooting, but the project wasn’t entirely finished. It is now. And since I hate leaving things undone, we went back and shot a few portraits of the daughter settled into the renovated space. This was also the first time in the field with the new Pocket Wizard set up. I knew the room was going to be dark and while I favor natural light, this shot... Read More
